Interview with the Creator of "Magical Mission"!
about 2 months ago – Tue, Dec 03, 2024 at 02:37:30 PM

Hello again, Sidequestors!

With just over 48 hours left in the campaign for the Sidequests Anthology, we're ready for you to meet another of our amazing creators!

Elizabeth Corbiere on Imagination, Telekinesis, and Magic

Elizabeth Corbiere is a cartoonist from Ontario, Canada, who loves drawing comics, making up stories, and creating characters. Her short comic, “Magical Mission,” is her first publication and will appear in the Sidequests Anthology!

Tell us about your inspiration for "Magical Mission," Elizabeth!

When I thought about the anthology’s theme, I thought about how many people might think of the word “sidequests” and about video game quests.…I thought, “Why not make it about an everyday situation where something unusual happens?”

I remembered how I used to struggle with math homework when I was a kid, and that is where I came up with the little boy for the story. As I started thumbnailing the first page, I created the magical being, princess, and knight. I wanted “Magical Mission” to be a fun, light-hearted story that anyone could enjoy and have a little laugh!

What comic book character do you identify most with, and why?

A comic character I can relate to is Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes. He has this big imagination with so many ideas that he just can’t keep down, and he sees the world around him from a different perspective than everyone else.

Thanks for supporting Elizabeth and the other creators of the Sidequests Anthology!

Thankful for our New Backers & Our Creators!
about 2 months ago – Thu, Nov 28, 2024 at 09:52:29 AM

On this day in the United States, we take a break from our busy lives to focus on what we're most grateful for. 🦃🥧🍷

This year, there's no question.

At Oneshi Press, we're thankful for the 36 incredible creators who made the Sidequests Anthology happen, and the 126 amazing backers who are supporting their work with their pledges! 🙏🥰

With that in mind, let's help the creators and the backers get to know each other with another creator interview!

Hoodie Song on Spider-Man, Expectations, and Putting in the Work

Hoodie Song is a professional Webtoon writer from Boston, Massachusetts. Across his published titles, he has amassed over half a million subscribers and nearly 20 million total views.

Hoodie is the writer of "Don't Forget the Flowers," with art by Scott Godlewski.

Can you tell us about your inspiration and process for creating "Don't Forget the Flowers" for the Sidequests Anthology?

Two words, joined by a hyphen: Spider-Man.

I’m a massive fan of the character and have always found myself drawn to his stories, whether it’s comics, animation, or live-action. I wanted to encapsulate that vibe and tone of a well-meaning person being stretched too thin and the struggle of balancing different aspects of their life. It’s the core of Spider-Man, and the core of Kira in “Don’t Forget the Flowers.”

What’s important to you in a comic book, as a reader? As a writer?

Broadly speaking, a comic needs to give the reader a reason to care. The world is flooded with different sources of media to consume. Hundreds of new movies a year, thousands of comics, etc. I, and many readers, have very little patience for stories that meander with boring characters, a lackluster plot, and nothing to latch on to. Now, not everything needs to be a nonstop action thrill ride, but no matter what genre you’re writing in, show me why you deserve my attention more than the countless other comics I could be reading.

Thank you so much for being a part of this amazing anthology! Let's go!

Enikő Bányász on Garfield, Goblins, and Kindness

Enikő Bányász is a first-generation Hungarian-American artist who specializes in teaching sequential art, character design, and animated arts. She studied at PNCA for Illustration, continued on to study at PCC for Early Childhood Education and Development, then completed her academic studies at PSU with a bachelors in Art Practice. Enikő is the creator of “Goblin’s Quest.”

What inspired you to create “Goblin’s Quest”?

To be honest, I really wanted to make a cute Goblin character for a while, and had the idea of his design roughly in my head. I wanted to create a scrappy little character who’s shown signs of being roughed about, but [is] still bright and optimistic as ever.…

But what I really wanted to emphasize in my short story was how important it is to pay attention to and help those around us however we can. We think the world can be so big due to the way communication and travel has developed so rapidly, but in a lot of ways we are much closer to each other than we think we are; we have to look out for each other. So all the kindness and help Goblin gives to others, in turn comes back to him, and I think that can really be a reward to a quest in itself. (But a delicious pie at the end of your quest is good, too!)

If you were to be assigned a quest like the goblin in your story, what kind of mission would you like to be sent on?

Haha, well I wouldn’t mind a shopping-list quest, personally! Hopefully in my quest, I’d also like to take a walk through the scenic and wild countryside to the market. I feel like I’d probably take more stops than he would, to admire the scenery. But I hope it would be to fetch some food so I can grab a snack to eat while I’m out and about!
